Fun Stuff to Do in London

Samuel Johnson once wrote, "If a man is bored of London, he is bored of life." The curly funny named streets of London offer a plethora of activities for the curious traveler. The pubs, shops, coffeehouses, theaters, street buskers and nightclubs make London as easy place to encounter diversion.
  1. The Three Great Markets: Camden, Brick Lane, Portobello

    • Camden Market, which is for the young at heart, hosts a dazzling array of street food, funky punky fashion stalls and some live bands that start early and play late.

Brick Lane Market, which peaks on Sundays, offers a glimpse into the historical anthropology of this great city. Originally an East Indian borough, it has been invaded by hipsters, designers, artists and top international chefs. It is also a good place to find a wicked deal, yard-sale-style, on second (or tenth) hand goods.

Portobello Road Market is a little more upscale. It has a great range of antiques, imported quality goods and local Caribbean cuisine. The pre-Christmas and summer carnival crowds can be overwhelmingly fun.

    The Thames: Both Banks

    • A trip to London is not complete without a stroll along The River Thames. Start in Putney or Vauxhall and wander East. Big Ben, The London Eye (ferris wheel), The National Film Theatre, The National Theatre (stage) and the Tate Modern Art Gallery are all interesting stops along the stroll. Cross the Millenium Bridge and enter Saint Paul's Cathedral. If you still have the legs, take a ferry down to Greenwich and enjoy a pint watching the re-building of the Cutty Shark Schooner.

    Nightlife

    • Nightlife in London can be outrageously expensive, so do your homework and compare prices for tickets and pubs well in advance. Deals can be found. Sign up to a weekly email newsletter called LeCool or purchase a copy of TimeOut London to keep up to date.

Do not be afraid to venture out for a rowdy pint, especially in zone two or three, where the locals are always up for a heated conversation. When the last call bell starts ringing, ask the bar staff for the next port of call, they usually know where the good after hours clubs are rocking.
