Fun Stuff to Do in Greenville, North Carolina

Although the surrounding outskirts are made of flat, sprawling green farmland, Greenville, North Carolina, is actually a bustling modern city with a booming tobacco industry and home to a major educational institution – East Carolina University. It’s not all business and books, though. The city still makes time to have fun, with most lively events taking place in Uptown Greenville, a historic district lined with gas lamps and buildings dating back to the turn of the century.
  1. Extreme Adventures

    • Known for its thriving BMX scene, Greenville is home to a host of BMX sports facilities open to the public. Blackjack Mx has an outdoor track for adults outfitted with switchbacks, bowl turns and tabletops. There’s also a fenced-in motocross track for kids equipped with rollers and berms. The track is open from Friday through Sunday, regardless of the weather. Continue your adrenalin rush at Extreme Park, located in Jaycee Park. Extreme Park is a skate and BMX park with a variety of ramps and pipes. Admission to the park is free, but helmets and knee and elbow pads are required at all times.

    The World of Art

    • Enjoy Greenville’s arts scene by attending events held throughout the city and sponsored by the Magnolia Arts Center. The non-profit group stages a variety of theatrical events at various sites, including everything from walking ghost tours throughout town to full-scale mounted productions of Broadway plays and musicals. Explore the streets of Uptown Greenville during the city’s First Friday ArtWalks. Merchants display the works of local artists and designers, including such items as paintings, photographs, sculptures and jewelry. Enjoy food, drinks and free rides on the Greenville Jolly Trolley.

    Meet the Community

    • Mingle with the locals by attending community events. Freeboot Friday is essentially a street party held the Friday before East Carolina University home football games. Held in downtown Greenville, the festive setting includes food and drink vendors, prize giveaways and live musical acts. The party continues with the Uptown Umbrella Market, a weekly street fair held from May through August. Merchants sell such local products as fruits, vegetables, seafood and handcrafted arts. Take a stroll through the open-air market as live musicians provide entertainment.

    Parks and Fairgrounds

    • Soak up the green urban space of Greenville with a trip to River Park North. Enjoy a leisurely day at the 324-acre park as you fish from one of the five ponds, embark on a pedal boat ride or explore the surroundings via the three hiking trails. For a nominal fee, visit the Walter L. Stasavich Science and Nature Center, home to a 10,000-gallon freshwater aquarium and interactive exhibits on wildlife. From late September until early October, Pitt County Fairgrounds hosts the annual Pitt County Fair. Spend the day watching such lighthearted entertainment as pig races, puppet acts and magic shows. You can also take a turn on carnival rides, enjoy the evening fireworks display and take in musical performances, including gospel, country and rock bands.
