Fun Stuff to Do in Hugo, Oklahoma

With just more than 5,000 residents, Hugo is a small town in southeast Oklahoma. Hugo was founded in 1902 and was an Indian territory until 1907. The area holds a wealth of outdoor recreation possibilities, thanks to the creation of Hugo Lake in 1960. Despite its small size, Hugo is home to many fun activities.
  1. Hugo Lake

    • The 13,000 acres of water at Hugo Lake attract a variety of outdoor enthusiasts. Fishers find ample schools of bass and catfish. Around the lake, 10 tent camping sites are available for those looking to spend a night in the fresh outdoors. Water skiing is available in 8,000 acres of the lake. For those looking to stay dry, the hiking trails surrounding the lake provide a chance to get some exercise and examine the local wildlife.

    Circuses

    • Sometimes affectionately referred to as Circus City, USA, Hugo hosts three of the country's largest circuses during winter months. Kelly-Miller, Carson & Barnes and Culpepper & Merriweather make yearly stops in Hugo. The circuses feature jugglers, dancers, clowns fire eaters, elephants, tigers and camels to entertain attendees of all ages.

    Frisco Depot Museum

    • With countless artifacts and pictures of Hugo's history, the Frisco Depot Museum is a way for residents and tourists to learn more about the area. The museum also features a tribute to Hugo's railroad and circus history. Art exhibits and special events, including parades and music festivals, are also staples of the Frisco Depot Museum, which was restored by the Choctaw County Historical Society.

    The Endangered Ark

    • The Endangered Ark Foundation in Hugo is home to the second-largest Asian elephant sanctuary in the United States. The facility gives guests a chance to view the enormous animals up close and personal. Some tours of the location feature an elephant feeding.

    Hugo Golf Club

    • Since the 1920s, the Hugo Golf Club has offered a nine-hole course suitable for golfers of all skill levels. Water comes into play on three of the par-35 course's holes. The course is open seven days a week to the public. Memberships, tournaments and special rates are available to avid golfers.
