Sit back, relax and take in a movie at the historic McHenry Downtown Theater. This theater only shows two different movies at a time, so if the movie you want to see is not playing there, head to Classic Cinemas, in Fox Lake, which is about a 20-minute drive. During the summer months, you also have the option to see a movie outside at the McHenry Outdoor Theater.
Teach your children that science can be fun by taking them on a family mission to the Challenger Learning Center for Science and Technology, located approximately 20 minutes from McHenry. The center hosts a fun, educational event for families the first Friday of each month. Teachers can also take their students on field trips to the center.
Prepare for a good laugh at the Raue Center for the Performing Arts comedy club. Located in Crystal Lake, the club features comedians that are some of the biggest names in comedy. If you would prefer a more dramatic show, visit the Woodstock Opera House, in the neighboring town of Woodstock. Both the Raue Center for the Performing Arts and the Woodstock Opera house are located approximately 20 minutes from McHenry.
During the summer months, head outside to McHenry’s Peterson Park Beach. Go for a swim or rent a boat for a nice row around the water. You can also visit the city's other park, East Beach, and spend the day enjoying nature.
