Portland, ME to Yarmouth, NS: 202 Miles Across the Gulf of Maine

Direct distance: ~202 miles (325 km) across the Gulf of Maine. But no direct road or ferry exists—you must go around.

Actual Travel Options

  • Ferry (seasonal, 2024 status: suspended): The CAT high-speed ferry (Bar Harbor, ME → Yarmouth, NS) ran 3.5 hrs, 2024 season canceled. Check thecat.maine.gov.
  • Drive (via land): Portland → Calais (border) → NB Trans-Canada → NS → Yarmouth. ~450 mi, 8–9 hrs.
  • Fly: PWM → YQY (no direct). Connect via YHZ (Halifax) or BOS. 4–6 hrs total.
  • Private boat: 6–10 hrs weather-dependent. Customs at Yarmouth.

Why the Gap?

Bay of Fundy tides (world's highest, 16m), fog, winter ice, and limited demand killed regular ferry service. The CAT (2022–23) lost money. No replacement funded.

Portland vs. Yarmouth

Portland (ME): 68K, working waterfront, food scene.
Yarmouth (NS): 6K, lobster capital, gateway to Acadian Shore, Cape Forchu lighthouse.

202 miles as the gull flies. 8+ hours as the car drives. The Gulf of Maine keeps them apart.
