How did Vermont become a colony?

Vermont was never a colony. It was originally part of the New Hampshire Grants, a disputed territory between New York and New Hampshire. In 1777, the people of Vermont declared independence from both New York and New Hampshire and formed the Vermont Republic, which was not recognized by the United States until 1791, when it was admitted to the Union as the 14th state.
