Where does garbage go in New York?

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is responsible for the collection and disposal of garbage and recyclables in New York City. The city has a curbside recycling program for paper, plastic, metal, and glass. Garbage that is not recycled is taken to one of the city's four waste transfer stations, where it is compacted and loaded onto barges. The barges then transport the garbage to landfills in New Jersey and Virginia.
