Where is Manhattan?

Manhattan is the most densely populated borough of New York City, as well as the borough that forms *the heart of the city's metropolitan area.* Manhattan is largely coextensive with the *island of Manhattan, at the mouth of the Hudson River, and separated from the U.S. state of New Jersey to the west and from the borough of Queens to the east by the East River and the Harlem River (a tidal strait of the Hudson). The island of Manhattan has been inhabited since at least 10,000 BC. The first European settlement on the island was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624 and was named New Amsterdam. The British captured the colony in 1664 and renamed it New York. The city grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries, and by the early 20th century, Manhattan had become the world's leading financial and commercial center.

Today, Manhattan is home to some of the world's most iconic landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and the Rockefeller Center. The borough is also home to several major universities, museums, and theaters.
