In 1664, King Charles II of England granted the land that is now New Jersey to his brother, James, Duke of York. James then sent out a group of settlers to establish a colony there. The settlers named the colony New Jersey after the Isle of Jersey in the English Channel.
New Jersey remained a British colony until the American Revolution.
