Wales' MEPs: Historical Representation (Pre-Brexit)

Important context: The United Kingdom left the European Union on 31 January 2020. As a result, Wales (and all UK nations) no longer has Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).

Final Term (2019–2020)

In the 2019 European Parliament election (held 23 May 2019), Wales elected 4 MEPs from a single Wales constituency (using D'Hondt proportional representation):

  • Nathan Gill — Brexit Party
  • James Wells — Brexit Party
  • Jackie Jones — Labour
  • Jill Evans — Plaid Cymru

They served until UK departure on 31 Jan 2020 (approx. 8 months).

Historical Allocation

  • 1999–2004: 5 MEPs
  • 2004–2009: 4 MEPs
  • 2009–2014: 4 MEPs
  • 2014–2019: 4 MEPs
  • 2019–2020: 4 MEPs

Reduction from 5 to 4 in 2004 followed EU enlargement and reapportionment.

Current Representation

Wales is now represented in:

  • UK Parliament: 32 MPs (House of Commons) + Welsh peers (House of Lords)
  • Senedd Cymru (Welsh Parliament): 60 Members (MSs) — devolved legislature

The "4 MEPs from 4 electoral regions" description in some sources is incorrect — Wales was a single multi-member constituency for its entire EU membership.
