Where was kilwa located?

The Kilwa Sultanate was a medieval East African state that flourished on the coast of present-day Tanzania. It was centered on the island of Kilwa Kisiwani, which lies about 250 kilometers south of present-day Dar es Salaam. The sultanate was founded in the 10th century by Ali ibn al-Hassan Shirazi, a Persian merchant from Shiraz who settled on the island. Kilwa grew to become a major trading center and a center of Islamic learning on the East African coast. The sultanate reached its peak in the 13th and 14th centuries, when it controlled much of the coast from present-day Somalia to Mozambique. However, the Kilwa Sultanate declined in the 16th century due to Portuguese expansion in the Indian Ocean.
