Why Was the Auckland War Memorial Museum Built?

The Auckland War Memorial Museum (Tāmaki Paenga Hira) was originally constructed as a memorial to the 18,166 New Zealanders who died in World War I. Opened in 1929 on the Pukekawa (Auckland Domain) hill, its neoclassical design evokes a Greek temple—symbolizing sacrifice and remembrance.

After WWII, the dedication expanded to include all subsequent conflicts (WWII, Korea, Malaya, Vietnam, peacekeeping). Today it’s both a war memorial and a major natural/human history museum housing Māori taonga, Pacific artifacts, and extensive natural science collections.
