Chad is a unitary state, not a federation. It does not have states or provinces. Instead, it is divided into 23 regions (formerly 22, with one added in 2012), which are further subdivided into departments and sub-prefectures.
Regions are administered by governors appointed by the president. This centralized structure reflects Chad's post-colonial governance model.
