Georgia’s Four Major Vegetation Regions
Ecological Zones of the Peach State
Georgia’s diverse topography creates four distinct vegetation regions:
- Ridge & Valley (NW): Long parallel ridges with oak‑hickory‑maple forests; valleys used for farming.
- Piedmont (Central): Rolling hills, mixed hardwoods and pine; heavily populated, agriculture and urban development.
- Blue Ridge (NE Mountains): High peaks, spruce‑fir‑hemlock forests; includes Chattahoochee‑Oconee National Forests, popular for recreation.
- Coastal Plain (South & East): Flat, sandy terrain; pine‑dominated forests (longleaf, loblolly); extensive farming and growing cities.
These regions support varied wildlife and drive the state’s forestry, agriculture, and tourism economies.
