England's First Permanent Settlement in North America: Jamestown

Jamestown, Virginia, founded in 1607, was England's first permanent settlement in the Americas. Established by the Virginia Company of London on the banks of the James River, the colony endured a harrowing start: disease, starvation, conflict with the Powhatan Confederacy, and the "Starving Time" winter of 1609–1610.

Under leaders like Captain John Smith and later John Rolfe (who introduced profitable tobacco cultivation), the settlement eventually stabilized. Jamestown became the capital of the Virginia Colony and the birthplace of representative government in English America (the House of Burgesses, 1619). Today, Historic Jamestowne preserves the archaeological site.
