Historical Buildings Near Hainesport, New Jersey

Hainesport is located in west central New Jersey, near the state's border with Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia. Close to the New Jersey Turnpike and Interstate Highway 295, Hainesport does not have historical buildings within the town, but the nearby towns of Mount Holly, Rancocas, Burlington and Eastampton feature historical structures and a past steeped in Native American and colonial history.
  1. Rankokus Indian Reservation

    • The Rankokus Indian Reservation (powhatan.org) is located in Rancocas, New Jersey. The reservation is run by the Powhatan Renape Nation, an American Indian Nation recognized by the state of New Jersey. The reservation provides social services to the community, educational activities through its museum and grounds that guests can walk through.

      Museum exhibits include artifacts such as instruments, tools, weapons, decorative arts and clothing. The museum also houses an art gallery with contemporary Native American art. The reservation grounds feature a recreated traditional village, and visitors can walk along the nature trail that runs through the reservation grounds.

      The reservation is open to visitors on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September through June by appointment. On the first and third Saturdays of each month it is open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and no appointment is necessary. As of 2011, admission is $7 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and $5 for children.

    Smithville Mansion

    • Smithville Mansion (smithvillemansion.org) is located in Eastampton, New Jersey. It is listed on the New Jersey and National Historic Registers. The property was purchased in 1776 by Jacob Parker, who built a house, a grist and a sawmill. In 1831 the property was purchased by the Shreve brothers and expanded.

      In 1865 Hezekiah Smith purchased the property and expanded the house. He added a boarding house that contains a reading room, a dining room and a theater. Smith built an annex later, which included a bowling alley, billiard room and game room.

      The mansion offers tours on Wednesdays and Sundays from May to October. In December, tours are offered for three weeks to celebrate a Victorian-style Christmas.

    Cabins, Prisons and Churches

    • Mount Holly Township is home to the Shinn-Curtis Log Cabin (no website; 23 Washington Street; Mount Holly. The cabin was initially discovered inside another house. That house was demolished in 1967 and inside its walls were the hand-hewn logs of the cabin, built in 1712. As of June 2011, the cabin is owned by the Mount Holly Historical Society, which offers tours.

      The Burlington County Prison (prisonmuseum.net) operated between 1811 and 1965. It was known for being the oldest operating prison in the United States at the time it closed. The prison is located at the corner of High Street and Grant Street in Mount Holly.

      St. Andrew's Episcopal Church (standrewschurch-mh.org) was established in 1742 by a royal charter from King George III. It was founded by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. Its current building was erected in 1844 on High Street. The church has 23 stained glass windows built by the Willet Hauser company.

    Peachfield Plantation

    • Also located in Mount Holly is Peachfield Plantation which dates to 1674 (no website; 180 Burrs Road, Mount Holly; 609-267-6996), when John Skene bought the land and named it "Peachfield." Skene built a house on the property, which was sold in 1695 to Henry Burr. Burr expanded the home before selling the home to his son John, who expanded it further in 1732. A fire destroyed much of the house in 1928. The house was later restored.

      In 1965, the property was deeded to the The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the state of New Jersey. The Colonial Dames use this as their state headquarters, at the time of publication.
