Oliver and Lisa Douglas: Not New Yorkers, But Hooterville Residents

Oliver and Lisa Douglas never lived in New York City.

In the CBS sitcom Green Acres (1965–1971), Manhattan lawyer Oliver Wendell Douglas (Eddie Albert) and his glamorous Hungarian wife Lisa (Eva Gabor) move to Hooterville—a fictional rural town in an unspecified state (often implied as near the Midwest/South).

The Premise

  • Oliver buys a rundown farm to escape city pressure
  • Lisa hates it but adapts with surreal humor (hotcakes, "dreams" of NYC)
  • Hooterville characters: Eb Dawson, Mr. Haney, Drucker, Sam Drucker, Arnold the Pig
  • Nearby: Pixley (county seat), Crabwell Corners

NYC Connection

Oliver's law office was in NYC (mentioned in pilot). Lisa's high-society references are Manhattan-centric. But their residence is the Hooterville farm. The show's comedy derives from the culture clash.

Hooterville was a studio backlot (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, later Filmways). No real location.
