Texas Post Oak Belt: Key Urban Centers

The Post Oak Belt (or Post Oak Savannah) stretches across east-central Texas, a transition zone between Piney Woods and Blackland Prairie. Major cities within or bordering this ecoregion:

Primary Cities

  • Austin: Western edge; capital, tech hub, Colorado River
  • Bryan/College Station: Heart of region; Texas A&M University
  • Waco: Northern fringe; Baylor University, Brazos River
  • Navasota: Central; "Gateway to Washington County"
  • Brenham: Western Bluebonnet Trail; Blue Bell Creameries

Metro Fringe Cities

  • Houston (NW suburbs): Katy, Cypress, Tomball transition into Post Oak Belt
  • Dallas/Fort Worth (SE suburbs): Kaufman, Terrell, Forney at western edge

Ecological Context

Named for Quercus stellata (post oak), this region features sandy, well-drained soils supporting post oak, blackjack oak, and yaupon understory. Historically maintained by fire and bison grazing. Now fragmented by agriculture, urbanization, and fire suppression.

Note: Dallas, Fort Worth, and Houston proper lie outside the belt but their expanding metros increasingly intersect it.
