Who found Maryland and why?
Maryland was founded in 1632 by a group of English colonists led by George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore. Calvert, who was a Catholic, received a charter from King Charles I to establish a colony in the New World where Catholics could practice their religion freely. The colony was named Maryland in honor of Henrietta Maria, the queen consort of England and wife of Charles I.
