What is county town?

A county town (in some countries known as a county seat or shire town) is a town that serves as the administrative centre for a county. In the United Kingdom and the United States, the county town was historically a town where administrative and judicial functions for a county were centred, and it was not necessarily the largest or most populous town within the county. In modern usage, the term "county town" often refers to a town with the largest population within a county.
