What event happened in North America 1587?

In 1587, English colonists on Roanoke Island in present-day North Carolina disappeared under mysterious circumstances, an event known as the "Lost Colony." The colonists led by John White, left England in 1587 and arrived at Roanoke Island later that year to establish a settlement. White later returned to England for supplies but was unable to go back until three years due to conflicts with Spain and unfavorable weather conditions. When he and this men finally returned in 1590 , they found the settlements had abandoned with only the word "Croatoan" carved into a wooden palisade. Despite extensive efforts to locate them the fate of the Roanoke colonists remains one of North America's enduring mysteries.
