The Seneca lived in the Finger Lakes region of present-day New York.
Why did they settle there?
- The Seneca were drawn to the Finger Lakes region because of its many natural resources.
- The region was bountiful in fish and wildlife (fishing and hunting), and it also had fertile soil for agriculture.
- The Seneca were also attracted by the region's climate, which was relatively mild compared to other parts of upstate New York.
- The area also gave them access to important trade routes, such as the St. Lawrence River and the Mohawk Trail which connect them to the Haudenosaunee Iroquois Confederacy.
