What State Is North of the Carolinas? Virginia & Tennessee

There is no single state "just north of Carolina" — because **there are two Carolinas**, and their northern borders differ.

North Carolina's Northern Border

• Virginia — entire northern boundary (320 mi / 515 km).

South Carolina's Northern Border

• North Carolina — entire northern boundary (330 mi / 530 km).

If You Mean "North of *Both* Carolinas"

Then **Virginia** (borders NC) and **Tennessee** (borders NC's western tip) are the states north of the Carolinas collectively.

Key Cities Near Borders

• VA/NC: Danville (VA) / Eden (NC), Roanoke Rapids (NC) / Emporia (VA).
• TN/NC: Bristol (twin cities), Mountain City (TN) / Boone (NC), Memphis? No — TN western border is MS River.

So: **Virginia** is north of North Carolina. **North Carolina** is north of South Carolina. **Tennessee** touches NC's northwest corner.
