Why is nickname The North Star State?

Minnesota is often called the North Star State because the North Star, also known as Polaris, is directly above the state's northernmost point. The state's license plates also feature Polaris. Additionally, the state motto is "L'Etoile du Nord," which is French for "The North Star."
