The average temperature for October in the southernmost point in New Jersey is 60 degrees Fahrenheit. October temperatures in the southern New Jersey counties of Cape May, Atlantic, Salem, Camden, Cumberland and Gloucester range from 56 to 59 degrees.
The central New Jersey counties of Burlington, Monmouth, Ocean, Mercer and Middlesex have average temperatures in October that are between 55 and 57 degrees Fahrenheit. These temperatures are slightly lower than temperatures in the southern counties because the elevation in New Jersey rises the further north one travels. There are also fewer bodies of water in central New Jersey, which leads to lower temperatures.
Northern New Jersey counties, including Somerset, Morris, Warren, Hunterdon, Bergen, Essex, Pasaic and Sussex, have on average the lowest temperatures in the state. In October, the average temperature throughout these counties ranged from 50 to 56 degrees Fahrenheit. This is due to the slightly higher elevation in this portion of the state and the abundance of small mountains scattered throughout the region.
Those parts of New Jersey that rest upon the coast of the Atlantic Ocean typically have higher temperatures on average than the rest of the landlocked state. For example, in October the average temperature along the New Jersey coast from Cape May in Southern New Jersey to Hackensack in Northern New Jersey ranged from 58 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Several beach towns, including Point Pleasant, Seaside Heights, Atlantic City and Wildwood have average October temperatures at or near 60 degrees.
