New Jersey Temperatures in October

The average temperatures in New Jersey in October will vary depending upon the specific region of the state. Temperatures will be cooler in Northern New Jersey because the elevation is higher than in the lower regions of the state. Temperatures will also vary depending on the proximity to bodies of water such as the Atlantic Ocean or various rivers, lakes and streams throughout the state.
  1. Southern New Jersey

    • Southern New Jersey temperatures in October are between 56 and 59 degrees.

The average temperature for October in the southernmost point in New Jersey is 60 degrees Fahrenheit. October temperatures in the southern New Jersey counties of Cape May, Atlantic, Salem, Camden, Cumberland and Gloucester range from 56 to 59 degrees.

    Central New Jersey

    • Central New Jersey's October temperatures are a few degrees lower than southern New Jersey.

The central New Jersey counties of Burlington, Monmouth, Ocean, Mercer and Middlesex have average temperatures in October that are between 55 and 57 degrees Fahrenheit. These temperatures are slightly lower than temperatures in the southern counties because the elevation in New Jersey rises the further north one travels. There are also fewer bodies of water in central New Jersey, which leads to lower temperatures.

    Northern New Jersey

    • Northern New Jersey in October is slightly cooler, in part due to small mountains.

Northern New Jersey counties, including Somerset, Morris, Warren, Hunterdon, Bergen, Essex, Pasaic and Sussex, have on average the lowest temperatures in the state. In October, the average temperature throughout these counties ranged from 50 to 56 degrees Fahrenheit. This is due to the slightly higher elevation in this portion of the state and the abundance of small mountains scattered throughout the region.

    New Jersey Coast

    • In October, New Jersey cities near water average temperatures close to 60 degrees.

Those parts of New Jersey that rest upon the coast of the Atlantic Ocean typically have higher temperatures on average than the rest of the landlocked state. For example, in October the average temperature along the New Jersey coast from Cape May in Southern New Jersey to Hackensack in Northern New Jersey ranged from 58 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Several beach towns, including Point Pleasant, Seaside Heights, Atlantic City and Wildwood have average October temperatures at or near 60 degrees.
