The Richton Park Public Library offers regular morning and evening discussion sessions for the young and old. There are also special sessions for new book releases, books written by African-American authors, and cookbooks. You can also join special discussions conducted by expert speakers on various topics. Call the library's front desk to learn how to register for a program.
Mingle with fellow senior citizens and war veterans during Wednesday bingo nights. The Benjamin O. Davis Post 311 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars holds regular bingo sessions every week from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the La Castina Hall on S. Governors Highway.
Spend a quiet day viewing natural and historical artifacts at the various galleries and nature preserves found in the Richton Park area. A few minutes away from the town is the Thornton Township Historical Society housed inside the old St. Paul Lutheran Church. The museum displays native Indian artifacts, old documents and photographs, and other tokens from the township's past. Just north of Thornton is the Thorn Creek Nature Center & Preserve where you can spend the day strolling, listening to wood lore, and creating crafts out of natural materials with other senior campers. And right next to Richton Park is Park Forest, where the 1950s Park Forest House Museum is fitted out as it would have been in the early 1950s, when the town of Park Forest was founded.
Get good physical exercise and a lot of encouragement from other health-conscious seniors. The township of Rich, which includes Richton Park, has its own walking club specifically for senior citizens. Regular meetings are on Tuesdays, when seniors walk the Old Plank Road Trail or inside the Lincoln Mall during rainy days.
If you are healthy and active, lend your time to helping other seniors who need it. The township of Rich has instituted a Senior Companionship Program where able seniors can act as companions to peers who regularly need assistance with transportation, housecleaning, feeding and other activities.
