Every part of the state has something to offer the younger generation.
  1. Boone and Area

    • Boone is located in the northern part of the state and has indoor and outdoor activities for children. The Children's Playhouse gives kids a chance to indulge in imaginative play or take part in arts and crafts. The playhouse organizes ongoing programs for children such as baby sign language and yoga. Kids will also like exploring Linville Caverns, which is a short day trip from Boone. The caves have a lighting system, paths and guides so that children can safely explore and learn. Blowing Rock, just 10 minutes south of Boone, has a Wild West theme park, Tweetsie, which has a three-mile train ride, live entertainment, rides, shopping, and activities such as panning for gold. A kids' zone focuses on train-oriented activities such as making paper trains or being an engineer.

    Cherokee and Area

    • The Cherokee Bear Zoo is sure to please children with its black bears, grizzlies, lemurs, tigers and many more animals. The zoo is located in the western part of the state and has a petting zoo where children can hand-feed goats. Cherokee also has a fun park with bumper cars, go-carts and mini-golf. Santa`s Land and Theme Park is another destination for kids. This park is open throughout the summer, and children can enjoy rides and playing with animals, which include reindeer and kangaroos.

    Spruce Pine and Area

    • The Historic Orchard at Altapass is located in Spruce Pine. Children will enjoy storytelling, hayrides, handmade fudge, ice cream treats and learning about how an orchard is run. Events are held throughout the year, and bluegrass music is a regular feature. A butterfly conservation project is on site, and children can see a variety of butterflies in their life stages. Spruce Pine is also known for mining, so children who are interested in learning about different gems and minerals will enjoy shopping and exploring in the area.
