American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) are found only in the southeastern part of the United States, including the Gulf of Mexico and the coastal areas of the Florida Keys. Alligators are freshwater animals, so they will be found in places like ponds, marshes and rivers.
Alligators grow to be between 8 and 11 feet long and weigh up to 400 lbs. They will also replace up to 3,000 teeth during their lifetime.
Both crocodiles and American alligators are found in the United States. The snout of the alligator is narrower than that of a crocodile, which prefers the saltwater and has protruding teeth.
