Old Atlantic City Hotels & Landmarks

Atlantic City New Jersey became a resort destination in 1880. From 1880 through the 1940s, the city saw a great deal of growth, with many grand hotels springing up to accommodate the influx of tourists. During this time, Atlantic City developed a reputation as a premier resort and entertainment destination. Although many changes came to Atlantic City after gambling was legalized there in the late 1970s, some of these grand buildings can still be found there today.

    • The Claridge Hotel and Casino originally opened in 1930, during the Great Depression's early years. The Claridge was able to operate as a successful hotel through the end of the 1970s, when it was sold and turned into a casino. Since the early 1980s the Claridge has changed hands numerous times. In 2001 the Claridge was acquired by Bally's and began operating as a hotel tower for Bally's Atlantic City.
