How to Enjoy Luxury Camping in the West

Luxurious camping destinations, combining superb outdoor locales with upscale tent lodgings, are becoming all the rage with travelers seeking something a bit different. The West offers a number of great places for this kind of "glamping" (short for "glamorous camping") getaway, where you can experience nature at its best without having to rough it. Here are some western "glamping" grounds to consider from Western Canada all the way to the Aloha State.

Head to Montanta's Resort at Paws Up, about 30 miles east of Missoula, with platform tents adorned with pretty paintings and king-sized feather beds, complete with electricity and private bathrooms. Gourmet fare is available, and the property sprawls across 37,000 beautiful acres.

Find a slice of the Serengeti in Northern California-Santa Rosa, to be specific, where Safari West offers hardwood-floored tents with fine furnishings and splendid views. A tour of the property on an authentic safari jitney is a must, where you'll encounter wandering wildebeests, zebras, giraffes and other exotic animals.

Not far away, Pescadero's Costanoa Lodge and Camp is a bit more rustic (and affordable), with 76 tent bungalows a short walk from the sea. This barren slice of coast is a fine place to commune with nature, with everything from hawks to elephant seals among the resident wildlife.

In Southern California's Santa Barbara area, El Capitan Canyon showcases comfy canvas tents with willow beds on a seaside enclave of 300 gorgeous acres. Wonderful canyon hikes await for the active traveler, and guests can barbecue their own meals at a fire-pit or have food delivered right to their tent.

Away from it all on San Juan Island, Washington, the accommodations at Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes might not be as cushy as some "glamping" getaways, but the canvas cabins are in a pristine setting that couldn't be much more remote. The resort provides s'more fixings you can cook on your private grill, or head to the popular Duck Soup Inn a short stroll away.

Journey to British Columbia's Sunshine Coast, where the Rockwater Secret Cove Resort provides true pampering in their Tenthouse Suites. Soak in your large tub overlooking the Pacific, dine on fine cuisine, or try your hand at salmon fishing, kayaking, horseback riding or a host of other activities.

For an affordable Hawaiian camping experience that is rustic yet comfy, head to Oahu's Malaekahana Park, where ten "Li'L Grass Shacks" are among the lodging options. The thatched shacks boast cushioned carpeted sleeping platforms, a high-pitched roof and three windows, with each site right on the beach.
