Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Lowlands: Canada's Economic Heartland

This physiographic region dominates southeastern Canada's economy, hosting over 50% of the national population and generating a disproportionate share of GDP.

Why It's the Core

  • Dense population: Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City, Hamilton, London
  • Transport nexus: Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Seaway (3,700 km inland shipping), rail, highways, Pearson & Dorval airports
  • Resources: Fertile soils (agriculture), Niagara Escarpment (aggregates), freshwater (industry, drinking)
  • Industry clusters: Auto (Ontario), aerospace (Montreal), finance (Toronto), tech (Waterloo), manufacturing, services

Geologic Origin

Flat to gently rolling plains underlain by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks (limestone, shale), formed by erosion of the Canadian Shield and glacial deposition. The lakes themselves are glacial scour basins.

Challenges

Urban sprawl, water quality (algal blooms), invasive species, climate resilience. Sustainable management of this crowded, productive corridor is Canada's defining 21st-century regional challenge.
