Is the Mississippi River East or West of New Jersey? West—By a Thousand Miles
The Mississippi River is west of New Jersey—by a very long distance.
Geography
- New Jersey: Mid-Atlantic state on the Atlantic coast.
- Mississippi River: Flows south through the central US (MN, WI, IA, IL, MO, KY, TN, AR, MS, LA).
- Separation: ~1,000+ miles (1,600+ km) of land, including the entire Midwest.
Why the Confusion?
- Both are major "Eastern US" water features in school geography.
- New Jersey's western border is the Delaware River—a Mississippi tributary? No. Delaware flows to Atlantic.
- Mississippi watershed does extend to western PA/NY, but not NJ.
New Jersey's Rivers
- Delaware River (west border)
- Hudson River (northeast border)
- Passaic, Hackensack, Raritan, Mullica (interior/coastal)
The Mississippi is a continental artery; New Jersey is coastal. They're in different hydrologic universes.
