Rivers of Nebraska: Mileage and Major Systems
Nebraska boasts over 56,000 miles (90,000 km) of rivers and streams, earning its nickname "The River State." The major systems are:
- Missouri River – forms the eastern/northeastern border; channelized for navigation.
- Platte River – crosses the state east-west; shallow, braided, critical for sandhill crane migration.
- Niobrara River – northern Nebraska; scenic, spring-fed, designated National Scenic River.
- Republican River – southern Nebraska; flows into Kansas, subject to interstate compact.
- Elkhorn, Loup, Blue, and Nemaha Rivers – significant tributaries.
Most Nebraska rivers are alluvial, fed by Ogallala Aquifer groundwater and seasonal runoff. They support irrigation (9 million+ acres), recreation, and wildlife habitat. Water allocation is governed by complex prior-appropriation law and interstate compacts.
