North American Deserts: Four Major Deserts Across Two Countries
North America has four major deserts, distributed across the United States and Mexico. Each has distinct climate, flora, and geography.
United States Deserts
- Great Basin Desert (Cold Desert)
- Largest US desert (~492,000 km²). Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Idaho, California. High elevation (1,200–3,000 m). Winter snow, summer heat. Sagebrush, saltbush, bristlecone pine. Endorheic basins (no ocean outlet).
- Mojave Desert (Hot Desert, Transition)
- ~124,000 km². SE California, S Nevada, NW Arizona, SW Utah. 600–1,500 m. Joshua tree indicator. Death Valley (lowest, hottest, driest in NA). Winter rain.
- Sonoran Desert (Hot Desert, Biseasonal Rain)
- ~260,000 km². S Arizona, SE California, most of Baja California, Sonora (Mexico). Two rainy seasons (winter fronts, summer monsoon). Highest diversity: saguaro, organ pipe, palo verde, ironwood, 2,000+ plant spp.
Mexico Desert
- Chihuahuan Desert (Hot Desert, Summer Rain)
- Largest North American desert (~362,000 km²). Mostly Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Zacatecas); extends into NM, TX, AZ. 1,000–1,500 m. Creosote, tarbush, lechuguilla, cacti diversity. Cuatro Ciénegas (unique springs).
Key Differences
| Desert | Primary Rain | Indicator Species | Temperature Regime |
| Great Basin | Winter / Snow | Sagebrush, Bristlecone Pine | Cold winters, hot summers |
| Mojave | Winter | Joshua Tree | Hot summers, cold winters |
| Sonoran | Winter + Summer Monsoon | Saguaro, Palo Verde | Mild winters, very hot summers |
| Chihuahuan | Summer Monsoon | Creosote, Lechuguilla | Mild winters, hot summers |
Not "Deserts" But Often Confused
- Colorado Plateau: High desert / semi-arid (Grand Canyon, Monument Valley) — distinct physiographic province.
- Painted Desert: Part of Colorado Plateau (Arizona) — badlands, not a separate desert.
- Carrizo Plain: San Joaquin Valley remnant — grassland/shrub.
Understanding these four deserts is essential for conservation, water policy, and appreciating North America's arid landscapes.
