There are a variety of festivals occurring during the fall in Oklahoma. Choctaw has an annual Oktoberfest at the beginning of September, celebrating German traditions, including food and dress. The town of Yukon hosts an annual Oklahoma Czech Festival for one day in early October. There are also a variety of family farms holding small events throughout the harvest time in the fall.
Camping is one of the best fall activities during a weekend in central Oklahoma. Staying outdoors allows you to experience the full breadth of Oklahoma's scenery, and its flora and fauna. Roman Nose State Park, Chicksaw National Recreational Area and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge are among the places offering RV and tent camping. Be sure to pack warmly because the autumn weather is quite colder than summer in Oklahoma.
Scenic drives are one of the best ways to witness the multitude of fall colors on deciduous trees lining the roadways. One of the most well known ones is the Talimena National Scenic Byway. Begin the drive on a Saturday, and spend the night in Robber's Cave State Park. You can camp or rent a cabin in the area. Continue the drive the next day on Hwy. 1 to Whister. Stop for lunch along the way in a state park or a roadside diner.
There are a variety of weekend retreats or escapes throughout central Oklahoma. Wineries are scattered around the area. Spend the night at a local bed and breakfast near one of the wineries to experience the local culture. Fishing trips are another common fall excursion, with rivers and lakes populated with trout during this time. Canton Lake is famous for its walleye fishing. Rent a nearby cabin for the evening or stay at a lodge.
