While the Hawaiian helicopter tour industry has a good safety record, it is not perfect. As of 2007, statistics showed one individual dying in a helicopter crash for every 800,000 flights.
In 1994, the FAA instituted a series of regulations for the Hawaiian air tour industry. In the years that followed, helicopter crashes decreased by 30 percent when compared to the 12 years prior to 1994.
In 2010, the FAA announced it was preparing a new round of regulations that affect Hawaiian helicopter pilots. These include limiting the number of hours a pilot can fly, equipping helicopters with radio altimeters, and preflight risk-analysis programs.
