What Are the Parts of the Globe?

The Earth, our home and third planet from the sun, is home to many countries, people, languages and cultures. The Earth also has a wide variety of climates, vegetation and animal life living on a surface with a diameter that spans over 7,900 miles (12,700). The Earth, or globe, is separated into four hemispheres: Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western. Exact locations on the globe are determined by the use of longitude and latitude, which are horizontal and vertical lines (respectively) running along the Earth's axis.
  1. The Americas

    • North America and South America are separated by the Panama Canal.

North and South America are located in the Western hemisphere, as well as the Northern and Southern hemispheres, respectively. The Americas are bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the East and the Pacific Ocean on the West, with the Caribbean Sea in between the two continents. North America consists of the United States and Canada as well as Latin America, which is not technically a separate continent. South America consists of many countries including Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Venezuela.

Europe, Asia and the Middle East

    • Asia is the largest continent and is made up of over 44 countries and island nations.

Europe and Asia are considered separate continents but are technically part of the same land mass. Europe is located in the Northern and Eastern hemispheres and is home to many countries such as France, Spain, Germany, Italy and the island nations of Great Britain. Europe is also home to the Mediterranean, North, Baltic, Black and Caspian Seas. Asia, the largest land mass on Earth, is home to enormous countries like Russia, China and India. Eastern Europe and Asia are joined together by the Middle East and countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Syria.

    Africa

    • The island nation of Madagascar is located to the East of Africa.

The continent of Africa has many countries, some of which are changing even now. Africa is home the Nile, the longest river on Earth, and the Sahara, the largest desert. Africa has a wide range of landscapes, vegetation and wildlife such as lions, gorillas and giraffes. Africa is bordered by the Indian Ocean on the East and the South Atlantic Ocean on the West.

    Australia and the South Pacific

    • The South Pacific includes Micronesia, a vast group of islands.

Australia is the smallest continent, but is conversely one of the largest countries on Earth. Australia is home to natural wonders such as the Great Barrier Reef and diverse wildlife including kangaroos and koalas. The island country of New Zealand lies to the Southeast of Australia. Australia is bordered by the South Pacific Ocean on the East and the Indian Ocean on the West. Australia is located within close proximity to the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.

    Antarctica

    • Antarctica is almost 98% solid ice.

Antarctica is an uninhabited continent made of ice that is located at the Southern pole of the Earth. Antarctica is relatively untouched by humans due to its cold climate, but is home to wildlife such as penguins and whales.
