World's Biggest Construction Projects

The seven wonders of the world may need to be updated with the arrival of recent big construction projects. All are dynamic and known world-wide; some consist of many nations coming together for production. Some even have a soulful meaning to their nations, and take a deep place in the hearts of many.
  1. Impregilo

    • The world's largest bridge tender is with the Italian construction company Impregilo. The bridge will be between Sicily and mainland Italy. The project is expected to be finished by 2012, and the total length of the bridge will be 3,666 meters. It will have a deck of 60.4 meters, as well as six traffic lanes, two service lanes and two railway lines.

    Queen Mary 2

    • The Queen Mary 2 is the largest passenger ship that has ever been built, and is often referred to as the floating city. It was built in 1.5 years, took its first voyage on Jan. 12, 2004, and carries more than 2,620 passengers.

Some of its features include a nightclub, casino, spa, wine bar, a library and a planetarium. It also has 15 restaurants and bars, and weighs about 151,400 gross tons. The cost to build Queen Mary 2 was $800 million.

    Freedom Tower

    • Construction on The Freedom Tower in New York City began on April 27, 2006. It will have 73 stories; the top three stories are reserved for the restaurants, bars and an observation deck, and the bottom 70 stories will be dedicated as office space. The cost of this immense structure is estimated to be $12 billion. A cable suspension structure will support the freedom tower. Wind turbines will partially power the building which will be compensating for the 20 percent of the building's energy.

    International Space Station

    • The International Space Station is the biggest cooperative science project in the history of the world. Sixteen nations will pay to build the station, which is about four times in size of the Russia's Mir station. The cost is estimated to be more than $130 billion. Its weight will be more than one million pounds, and will include an acre of solar panels. The width will be 356 feet and the length will be 290 feet.

Burj Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

    • This is going to be the world's tallest structure. It is 874 feet taller than the proposed Freedom Tower of New York. It has 160 floors which will be dedicated for hotels, a huge shopping mall, residential apartments and office space. The cost is estimated to be $2 billion. The building will be three sides and built around a core; as the building ascends, the core gets smaller.
