How many cities are there in the Earth?

It is difficult to determine an exact number, as different definitions of what constitutes a city can be used. For example, some definitions may include all settlements with a population of over 100,000 people, while others may include smaller towns or villages that are considered to be urban areas.

According to the United Nations, there were an estimated 33,277 cities in the world in 2018. Of these, 473 cities had a population of over 1 million people.
