How to Change Tires on an Airstream

Airstream travel trailers are easily identifiable with their unique aluminum exterior and rounded aerodynamic lines. The company was founded in 1929 by Wally Byam. Today, Airstreams are a popular choice among camping enthusiasts and come direct from the factory with brand-name tires. According to the owner's manual, you should check the tire pressure often, keeping them within the specifications for your specific model, and you should check the wheel lugs before each trip to avoid wheel separation. When it comes time to change a tire, follow the manufacturer's instructions or consult with a professional.

Instructions

Loosen the lug nuts and raise the tire to change. If you have a jack, its head should be placed in the mainframe rail on the underside of your Airstream, toward the rear wheels. The area will be labeled "jack" with an arrow pointed to the area in which you should place the jack head. If you do not have a jack, you will need to drive your Airstream onto a ramp or a device designed to raise your tires.

Chock the remaining wheels for safety. Loosen the lug nuts with a tire iron and remove the tire. When you are removing the wheel for the spindle, mark it to ensure you replace the new tire in the same position on the drum. If you are mounting on a different drum, you will need to lightly sand any corrosion or loose materials from the surface of the drum.

Replace the old tire with a new one. Replace and tighten the lug nuts by hand. Remove the jack or ramp from the vehicle so that the new tire is on the ground. Use your tire iron to torque aluminum wheels between 110 and 120 foot pounds. Torque steel wheels to 95 foot pounds.
