How to Tour in a Vintage Airstream

First designed by Wally Byam, Airstream trailers have become synonymous with American cross-country road trips. The sleek metallic vehicles are functional and have a distinctive look. Airstream claims that "every inch of an Airstream has a functional purpose. There is no planned obsolescence." These vehicles are also made to stand the test of time. According to the company, many Airstream trailers from the 1930s are still in use. By following a few simple steps, you too can travel in style in an Airstream.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn how to maneuver your vehicle. Driving an Airstream can take some getting used to. Make sure you are comfortable turning, making stops and parking before you head out on your journey. Located across the country, RV driving schools offer help for people who need extra training.

    • 2

Plan your trip. There is almost nowhere you can't go in an Airstream. Decide which route you will take to get where you want to go and whether want to stay in parking lots, rent space in trailer parks or camp in rural areas.

    • 3

Make reservations. If you are travelling during the summer and plan to stay in a campgrounds, make sure the campsites you have chosen have spots available for you.

    • 4

Study RV lingo. Learn more about the terminology used by RV enthusiasts to communicate with one another. In "Motorhome" magazine, Randy Sellhorn explains that "learning the lingo might help you with buying a motorhome, talking to other owners, or describing problems to your insurance company in case you file a claim. Plus, you might be able to convince people that you are a full-timer, even if you're not."

    • 5

Inspect your Airstream to ensure everything is in working order and the mechanical parts are up to scratch before you leave home. Traveller Misty Tosh explains that "when you're dead alone grilling some fish on a deserted beachfront in Veracruz, the last thing you want is an annoying generator to kill the moment."

    • 6

Make sure that you have a complete First Aid kit on board.

    • 7

Stock up on groceries. Take enough of the things you absolutely cannot live without to last throughout your journey. Bringing along a few jars of your favorite smoked peach salsa can go a long way toward making your trip a happy one.

    • 8

Decorate the Airstream with a favorite blanket, pillows or photographs of loved ones. Make your living space as comfortable as possible.

    • 9

Leave a copy of your itinerary with a friend or relative before you begin your journey, in case of an emergency. Providing your emergency contact with a copy of your health and insurance information is also a good idea.
