How to Operate a Bypass on a RV Water Heater

An RV water heater bypass is used to add or remove the water heater from the recreational vehicle's plumbing circuit. When winterizing your RV or making repairs to the water heater, the water heater is bypassed to prevent any water from entering the tank. An RV water heater can hold 6 to 10 gallons of water. When winterizing your RV, bypassing the water heater prevents antifreeze, used to winterize the plumbing system, from entering the water heater, reducing the amount of antifreeze required to winterize. Learning to operate the water heater bypass properly is essential to winterizing your RV.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the water heater on the exterior of the RV. The water heater has a square access cover with a smaller mesh screen at the top of the cover. Note the location of the access cover.

    • 2

Find the interior access door or panel to the water heater by using the location of the exterior water heater access panel. The water heater is generally located in an easily accessible cabinet or compartment.

    • 3

Open the access door or panel to view the back of the water-heater tank. There are two water pipe connections on the back of the water heater, a red pipe at the top and a blue pipe at the bottom. Another blue pipe connects the upper red pipe and the lower blue pipe together. Each connection has a water valve between the water pipe connection and the water tank. A third valve is located in the pipe connection between the upper red pipe and the lower blue pipe.

    • 4

Bypass the water heater by turning the upper and lower water valve handles clockwise and turning the water valve handle between the upper red pipe and the lower blue pipe counterclockwise. Having the valves in these positions prevents water from entering or exiting the water heater tank. This configuration also allows the cold water to circulate through the connection between the lower blue pipe and the upper red pipe and back in to the plumbing system.

    • 5

Reverse the process to add the water heater back to the plumbing system.
