How to Drain the Water Heater in a Suburban RV

Winterizing your RV is one of the most important things you must do before putting it in storage for the winter. Failure to do so can result in water damage and frozen pipes. This process starts with draining the water from the water heater and water tanks to avoid frozen plumbing systems. Draining the water heater from your suburban RV water heater is easy enough for anyone to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water system's pressure pump located near the water heater. Also shut off the gas supply and the electric power to the water heater at the switch from the element or at the circuit.

    • 2

Wait a few minutes to assure that all the electricity currents and gas have cleared the unit to avoid electrocution or other problems.

    • 3

Drain all the water from the faucets by turning them to "on." Be sure to turn on the faucets in both the bathroom (sink and shower) and kitchen.

    • 4

Remove the anode rod from the tank to drain the water Keep an eye on the water to ensure it does not pool over onto the ground or cause damage inside the RV. Replace the anode rod and wipe the tank dry so no water is sitting in it.
