How to Replace an Electric Hot Water Heater Element in an RV

RVs, like houses, come with water heaters that provide hot water for cooking, cleaning and bathing. Without a heating element in the water heater, one of the most sought-after luxuries of owning an RV disappears. However, these elements work much like light bulbs and are easy to replace.

  • Volt ohm-meter
  • New element
  • Screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

      Locate the A/C wiring to the heater and disconnect.

    • 2

      Check the element for continuity with the volt ohm-meter.

    • 3

      Replace the element if it is burned out by disconnecting the element and unscrewing the four screws holding it in.

    • 4

      Use the special heating element tool if it is the other type of element that requires a special removal kit. These are sold at RV supply stores and vary based on models.

    • 5

      Replace the element and screw back in.
