How to Hook Up an RV Water Tank

An RV, or recreational vehicle, allows you to enjoy the comforts of home while on the road or camping. Water tanks located within the RV provide water for drinking, cleaning, bathing and using the toilet. These tanks hold fresh and waste water during travel or in locations without a full hook up. When you return from your destination, or if you are staying at a campsite with hook up, you can empty waste water tanks and fill the fresh water tank.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Drive the RV to a campsite with full hookup, or another location where you have access to hookup. A hookup allows you to draw fresh water from a camp's plumbing system, as well as a connection to the sewer system to get rid of waste water.

    • 2

Park and level the RV so that the hookup is a short distance from the water-holding tanks on the vehicle.

    • 3

Attach a water pressure regulator and filter to the camp's hookup, if you wish. The pressure regulator keeps water pressure even, and a filter removes particles from the water to purify it. Both of these are sold at camping or RV stores and fit easily onto the faucet or nozzle at hookup locations.

    • 4

Connect the fresh water hose from the tank to the fresh water connection at the hookup.

    • 5

Place the connections for the gray water---water held in tanks from bathing, cleaning and washing---and black water---water held in a tank from the toilet---to the corresponding connections at the hookup. Ensure that the connections are secure. Open the valve for the gray-water tank and leave the valve for the black-water tank closed until waste has built up.

    • 6

Unhook connections when you leave your campsite. To dump black water, release the valve and pour a bucket full of water into the toilet to loosen and remove waste. You may add a tank-cleaning solution to cleanse the tank, following manufacturer's directions.
