How to Choose Auto Tires

Tires needed for an automobile are different than those you need for a truck or SUV. Trucks and SUVs require larger tires that can handle more weight. Also, if you are using your vehicle for a lot of traveling, then the type of tires you need will differ from tires for a vehicle you drive casually and less frequently. Tires are one of the most important parts of a vehicle. Without four good tires, you risk the safety of everyone in the car.

Determine the size of tire you need for your vehicle. The existing tires on a car should say the size near the rimming.

    • 2

Choose the tire that will last the longest. Look for the tire that offers the most amount of miles for the dollar. For instance, a tire that offers 10,000 miles for a small cost may not be as good of a buy as one that offers about 40,000 miles for double the price. If you travel alot, then you may prefer a tire that will last for many miles to avoid risks of a blow out or severe deterioration of the tire within months.

Measure the treads on the tire. The best tires will have a measurement of 1/16-inch deep treads. Use a tire tread depth gauge that can be bought at any automotive shop to determine the depth of the treads.

    • 4

Look for tires that work well in all types of weather. For instance, if you live in the northern part of the country, you may experience plenty of rain and snow and will need tires that will not slide on such surfaces.

Consider the tire's speed rating. This will also be on the tire, near the size. "H" speed rating can handle its best performance up to 130 mph while a "V" rating can handle up to 149 mph. There are other speed ratings such as "S," "T," and "U" that are not as commonly used since they can handle speed no faster than 124 mph. A higher speed rating usually indicates that the tire will not last as long, since the tire is made with a softer rubber compound.
