How to Obtain an International Driving License in Indonesia

Since Indonesia is composed of over 17,000 islands, transportation options abound. Besides boat and air travel, you can hire ojeks (motorcycle drivers), ride crowded angkots (minibuses), take taksis (taxicabs), or simply jalan (walk) to your destination. You can also opt to rent a car or motorcycle. If you are not an Indonesian citizen, to do so you will need to present an International Driving License with your regular drivers license.

Although there are many organizations that claim to issue International Driving Licenses and Permits, only two are authorized by the U. S. State Department: the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance through the National Touring Club. Locate your the AAA or National Touring Club Office for your area. (Non-U.S. travelers should look at the "Tips" section of this article to find the local license issuing organization for their area.)

If you've already arrived in Indonesia and do not have an International Driving License, you cannot get one there as they are not valid in the country of issuance. However, you can mail your passport photos, signed photocopy of your license, payment and the completed application to your local AAA or National Touring Club office, and they will issue one to you via postal mail. Be warned however, this process is not quick and might take four to six weeks for processing. Another alternative, if you are in Bali, is to obtain a Tourist Driving License, which costs between Rp 75,000 and 110,000 (around $15). The Tourist Driving License is valid for one month, but might not be valid outside the island.
