How to Obtain an International Driver's Permits

The American Automobile Association (AAA) and The National Auto Club are the only two organizations authorized by the United States Department of State to legally issue International Driver's Permits. Follow these steps to obtain one.

Instructions

  1. Apply Through AAA

      Make sure you meet the requirements. You must be at least 18 and possess a valid United States driver's license.

      Look up the address to your local AAA office at aaa.com

      Fill out and print the online application form from aaa.com

    • 4

      Take 2 passport-sized photographs.

      Decide whether to apply by mail or in person. AAA offers the option to apply in any AAA office, saving you time and money.

      Visit your local AAA office if you decide to apply in person. Pay the $15 application fee. The office will issue your International Driver's Permit--valid for one year only and not renewable.

      Mail the application, if you prefer: Make a copy of both sides of your driver's license. Include the copy, along with a $15 application fee, payable by check or money order, in a large envelope addressed to your local AAA office.

    Apply Through The National Auto Club

      Make sure you meet the requirements of being at least 18 years old and having a valid United States driver's license.

      Fill out and print the application form from the National Auto Club website.

      Take two passport-sized photographs.

    • 11

      Make a copy of both sides of your United States driver´s license.

      Enclose a $15 money order payable to the National Auto Club. Add an additional $3 mailing fee for regular airmail or check with Fedex for overnight mailing fees.

      Mail everything to National Auto Club 1151 E. Hillsdale Blvd. Foster City, CA 94404.
