How to Apply for an International Driving License

If you plan on traveling out of the country, it's a good idea to apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP), even if you don't plan on driving; a situation could develop requiring you to drive. The US government does not directly issue International Driving Permits; neither do individual states. Instead, the US government authorizes two companies to provide these permits.
