Complete the C-1 visa application form DS-156. (The State Department has made an electronic version available; see Resources.) All applicants are required to complete the application form, including parents of minors and babies listed in their parents' passports.
Pay the C-1 visa application fee. Payment is required to be made by credit or debit card at the time you call to schedule an appointment. The cost for a C-1 visa is $131.
Provide a recent color photograph. The photograph must be fewer than six months old and measure 2 inches square (for further requirements, see Resources).
Present your passport or other travel document, which must be valid for at least six months after your proposed departure date from the U.S. Your passport or travel document should also contain at least one blank page.
Show evidence that you possess sufficient funds to cover all your expenditure whilst in the U.S. You must also present evidence of your residence abroad to confirm your intent of returning after your stay in the U.S.
Present your itinerary or travel arrangements showing why you need to transit in the U.S.
Schedule an appointment at your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate (see Resources for locations). Applicants who are 14 to 69 years of age are required to apply in person. Applicants under 14 and over 80 may be allowed to apply via mail. Confirmation of the interview date and payment will be sent via email.
